Peasholm Park

Mr Harry. W. Smith, the Scarborough Borough Engineer, had the idea of setting out the new gardens in a Japanese style. His ideas have led to the creation of the unique Peasholm Park whose distinctly Oriental style remains unsurpassed almost 100 years later.

Work began on the construction of the island and lake in December 1911. The official opening was 19th June 1912 and Peasholm Park immediately became one of Scarborough’s top attractions.

In 1924, terraced seating was constructed to accommodate the crowds around the lake area, this being lit by the Oriental Dragon lanterns.

The restoration works to Peasholm Park have been made possible by the granting of funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and additional funds from Scarborough Borough Council.
The Oriental Dragon lanterns were part of the restoration around the lake. The detail for the restoration work was sent to different lighting manufactures. We here at JW (UK) Ltd had the opportunity to show our interest in this project with Scarborough Borough Council.

We submitted our ideas and waited for the outcome as we were up against many of the biggest manufacturers in the UK.  We are proud that on our ability and quality of the sample work that we produced JW (UK) Ltd was awarded the contract to replicate the Oriental Dragon lanterns and columns. This entailed creating new castings and columns from one of the original dragons so that we could produce the sixty Oriental Dragon lanterns and columns. These are with the aid of LED festoon lighting now installed around the lake and this has brought the lake back to its former glory.
